Widespread, dense forests of Japanese cedar and cypress trees have benefited from pre-seasonal warm weather, causing high levels of pollen dispersal over several weeks from February to May, and a corresponding rise in the incidence of allergic rhinitis (hay fever). A significant portion of the population suffers from seasonal allergic conditions – one news source says as much as 40 percent – and sales of symptom-relieving medications and masks have soared.
