Respiratory virus illnesses surge

The circulation of SARS-CoV-2, together with a strong and early start to the flu and RSV seasons, is putting added pressure on hospitals in some states as winter approaches and many activities return indoors. The rise in RSV infections was first observed in southern states: the CDC advised that ‘Florida has an earlier RSV season onset and longer duration than most regions of the country’. In related news, Flu News Europe reported high intensity influenza activity in Malta and medium intensity in Kazakhstan during the second week of October, while both influenza type A and B viruses were detected among all monitoring systems. Advice for travellers

In most years, seasonal flu is the most common vaccine-preventable travel-related illness: it’s likely to be found aboard aircraft, in crowded airport terminals, and at your destination. Vaccination is highly recommended and travellers should also avoid close contact with people showing flu-like symptoms, and thoroughly washing hands using soap and water after using the toilet and before eating.
