Perils of raw, undercooked pork

Exposure to Streptococcus suis bacteria has produced 50 serious infections in humans and resulted in 10 deaths so far this year, leading Thai health agencies to alert the public to the risks of eating undercooked or raw pig meat, organs or blood. The bacterium is commonly found in pigs and pathogenic strains spread to humans can present as meningitis, septicaemia, endocarditis and toxic shock syndrome.
