New MERS cases in 3 locations

The WHO has published an update on Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV), advising that since its last report in late December 2021, another four cases have been reported (in people with co-morbidities):  two from Riyadh, the others from Gassim and Makka Al Mukarramah - of which three had risk factors (‘a history of contact with dromedary camels and consumption of their raw milk in the 14 days prior to the onset of symptoms’). Additional MERS-CoV cases are expected from areas with viral circulation among dromedaries and the infection may be exported ‘by individuals who were exposed to the virus through contact with dromedaries or their products (for example, consumption of camel’s raw milk), or in a healthcare setting’. Read more
