Global polio digest

Two cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) were disclosed in the latest GPEI update – one patient in both Mozambique (Zambezia) and Malawi (Southern Province) dating from 2022. Also in the report, wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) environmental samples were detected in Afghanistan (Nangarhar and Kunar) and Pakistan (Punjab); a single environmental sample of cVDPV2 was collected from the NE city of Francistown in Botswana and in Nigeria, six cVDPV2 positive specimens were obtained (Sokoto, Zamfara and Niger states). Advice for travellers

Polio is a potentially serious viral illness that is spread through contact with infected faeces or saliva. The risk to travellers is generally low, however vaccination is recommended for travel to affected regions and is a requirement for travel to/from some countries.
