YF update - 82 cases from 3 states

Confirmation that 2019 has been a much milder season for yellow fever infections with 82 cases compared to more than 1,300 in 2018. The Secretariat of Health Surveillance summary noted that the cases had been reported from São Paulo (68 cases), Paraná (13) and Santa Catarina (1) and were mainly ‘rural workers or those exposed in forested areas’. Yellow fever virus is a mosquito-borne disease found in tropical and subtropical areas in Central/South America and Africa. While it can be severe, yellow fever infection is a very rare in Australian travellers. However, under the International Health Regulations (IHR), proof of vaccination may be required of any traveller entering or leaving an area at risk of yellow fever transmission.
