Cholera: Update for PNG, Vietnam and Cambodia
06-Feb-2010

The cholera outbreak that has been ongoing in Papua New Guinea for the past five months is continuing to spread, with more than 1900 cases reported to date. The latest affected area is the national capital district after one case travelled from East Sepik was diagnosed (and since recovered) in Port Moresby.
In Cambodia, the Russey Keo district of the capital Phnom Penh has been experiencing limited outbreaks of cholera, however one death has resulted. Acute diarrhoeal illnesses have also been reported from the south-western province of Prey Veng; cholera is suspected as the cause.
At least 45 people with diarrhoeal illnesses have been treated in a hospital in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Seven of those were diagnosed with cholera; all had come from the Cambodian provinces of Takeo and Kandal.
Travellers to cholera-affected areas are advised to discuss preventive measures with their travel health provider, including food and water precautions and vaccination.
