The outbreak of chikungunya continues to gain momentum across the country with confirmed cases now being reported in the middle, north and north-eastern provinces.
The total number of cases since January this year is now over 24,000, with the south most severely affected. (ProMED 11/6/09)
The symptoms of chikungunya include high fever, lasting a few days, and a prolonged period of joint and muscle pain, headaches and insomnia.
The incubation period is typically 2 to 4 days up to a maximum of 12 days. As yet no antiviral treatments, nor vaccinations exist to protect against the virus.
The only means of protecting against the virus is avoiding insect bites by using repellents containing DEET or CITRIODIOL, wearing loose long-sleeved clothing which is light in colour.
Usually treatment for chikungunya consists of rest, painkillers (paracetamol) and hydration. Other anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen and Aspirin should not be taken.
