Cambodia, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda battle cholera outbreaks

There have been 223 cholera cases in Cambodia since November, about half in the capital, Phnom Penh, according to the WHO.

Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities have issued a cholera warning for Vietnam's southern border region of An Giang. There have been 100 recent cases, with contaminated drinking water the most likely cause.

Cholera has been confirmed in Tanzania's Tanga and Manyara regions, and in the Temeke district of Dar es Salaam, with 151 cases.

In Zambia, authorities hope to contain an ongoing cholera outbreak in the capital, Lusaka, which has infected 103 people and claimed 11 lives. The government has opened treatment centres and is tracing those who came in contact with infected people.

Uganda’s Bududa District is on high alert for cholera following a landslide which has claimed at least 300 lives.

Transmitted by infected drinking water or food, cholera is generally a low risk for most travellers. However, strict personal hygiene and food and water precautions are essential, especially when visiting endemic areas with current outbreaks.
