In Fiji, typhoid fever is spreading at an alarming rate with 99 people now infected, 55 of these were over the past week.
Poor sanitation and contamination of food and water are suspected to be the main sources of transmission. Travellers are encouraged to discuss vaccinations prior to travel, whilst adhering to strict food and drink hygiene practices.
Symptoms of typhoid fever may be mild or severe and usually develop 1–3 weeks after exposure. These may include high fever, headache and constipation or diarrhoea. Treatment involves the use of antibiotics and other supportive therapies.
