Recent news reports from Bali identify higher numbers of tourists seeking treatment for dengue fever on the island. Local hospitals are filled to capacity with dengue cases.
Several Japanese tourists to Bali have also been diagnosed with dengue on return to their country. One worrying factor was that three different strains were found to be responsible for the infections.
The Pan-American Health Organization has announced a 100% increase in dengue fever cases in the first three months of this year and a poor outlook for the rest of 2010. Favourable mosquito breeding conditions produced by the El Nino effect have lead to states of emergency being declared in several Central American nations. The most severe conditions for 2010 have been forecast in Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia.
A vaccine to prevent dengue fever is still a few years away. Travellers should be especially aware of the risk of mosquito bites and take all avoidance measures, including:
Use a DEET or Citriodiol-containing insect repellent during the day, but particularly around dawn and dusk.
Avoid the use of perfumes, aftershaves and other strong scents.
Cover up by wearing long sleeves, long trousers – light colours are best.
