SWINE FLU Vaccine – is one dose enough?
14-Sep-2009
A single dose of swine flu vaccine appears to be enough to protect healthy Adults, according to research published in the New England Journal of Medicine 10.9.2009.

A trial in Adelaide found that 96.7% of healthy adult recipients mounted a good immune response following one dose of 15µg of the Swine Flu vaccine (Panvax). This highly anticipated news comes as a surprise to vaccine manufacturer CSL who had assumed that 2 doses would be required.

The side effects of the vaccine were similar to those of the annual influenza vaccine, with 46% of recipients having mild redness and swelling at the injection site, as well mild to moderate symptoms including headache, malaise and myalgia.

As soon as the Therapeutics Goods Administration releases the vaccine It is expected that the government will administer the vaccination to the most vulnerable in the community such as those with underlying medical conditions, pregnant women, indigenous persons, children in special schools as well as health care workers.
