Dengue Update from the World Health Organisation
02-Sep-2009
World Health Organisation figures quoted in a September 1 article of the New York Times make worrying reading: Dengue fever case numbers ‘in Southeast Asia surged from 152,448 in 2004 to 242,241 last year. In the Western Pacific region, 213,248 cases were reported in 2008, up from 160,823 in 2004.’ http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/02/world/asia/02iht-fever.html?_r=2&pagewanted=1

The increase has taken place over the past 30 years and is considered to be a side effect of globalisation and urbanisation (the Aedes mosquitoes which transmit dengue breed in urban areas).

Many popular holiday destinations for Australian tourists are dengue risk areas so it is advisable to seek appropriate advice before leaving.
